Quicken Loans Founder Proposes to Build Major League Soccer Stadium in Detroit
Dan Gilbert would take ownership of the Wayne County jail that currently sits on the stadium’s intended site.
According to a report, Quicken Loans founder Dan Gilbert has submitted a proposal to take ownership of the Wayne County jail site in Downtown Detroit, offering to build a new criminal justice complex in a separate location while creating a $1 billion commercial development that would include a Major League Soccer stadium.
Rock Ventures LLC proposes to build a new $420 million complex; using $300 million approved county dollars as well as the corporations own funds.
"Rock Ventures is prepared to build the County a new, high-tech criminal justice complex (estimated cost of $420 million) for the same $300 million, in exchange for the transfer of the Gratiot Avenue property and a credit for the savings a new consolidated criminal justice complex will provide," the company announced.
Plans for the new downtown space include parking, office, commercial, hotel and residential spaces.
