Gas Tax Increase to Pay for Infrastructure Possible
President Trump mentioned the possibility in an interview
President Donald Trump is considering raising the U.S. gas tax in order to pay for infrastructure improvements, according to a report. The federal gas tax hasn’t increased in over 20 years.
The idea was introduced to the trucking industry, who has stated the poor conditions of the U.S. highways need improving. The president has said that infrastructure is the one area he agrees with Democrats the most.
Efforts to raise the gas tax were raised in 2014 by Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), but ultimately failed without going to a vote. The tax currently sits at 18.4 cents per gallon, which has been the number since President Clinton.
